5 ways to boost small businesses while you #flattenthecurve

5 ways to boost small businesses while you #flattenthecurve

COVID-19 has certainly impacted our community quite significantly, but if I were to be honest, I would say, I have it good. I get a paycheck, my husband gets a paycheck, we have toilet paper, masks, plenty of food and a peloton bike at home. Intuit will even continue to give paid sick time off for those off us that have to take care of our kids in the next 3-4 weeks of school closures. We're good.

This is unfortunately not the reality of the small businesses around us. Many of them depend on customers, big or small, to keep their business going. Cash flow is like ... oxygen and right now, I guarantee you - they're finding it hard to breathe.

I was really touched by all the ideas our team shared today at staff meeting of all the little things we can do to help power prosperity, in a time where small businesses and self-employed need it the most. While we continue to practice "social distancing" to flatten the curve, here are some actionable ideas for how we can continue to support one another, especially if it's within your means:

  1. Consider not pausing your crossfit, pole-dance, or boxing gym memberships even if you legally can. Membership dues is what keeps a subscription-based business going so they can still make payroll.

  2. If you have to cancel a service appointment (hair cut, pedicure etc), remember to give a HUGE tip the next time you go or better still, do an early tip.

  3. Maybe stay away from restaurants, but there’s still doordash and uber eats! While you're at it, please order Chinese! They've been (unfairly) hit the hardest. And double up on tips for your delivery person. Similarly, Costco will be FINE. Go get your groceries from your neighborhood store even if it’s going to be more expensive. They need it more.

  4. The non-profits you support need your help more than ever. Church services may be canceled but they still need to pay the bills.

  5. Buy some giftcards from your favorite local small businesses for future use or gifts. Most of them sell online!! I just stocked up on sugar spa (see Aubrey for a facial!) in downtown mountain view.

Look around, and let's see where we can all pitch in a little.
