6 ways having kids get You ahead at work

6 ways having kids get You ahead at work

There’s the obvious tax benefit that most people think of naturally but let’s be honest, they also make us spend more so I’m not sure we come out better financially. That being said, I truly believe kids can make us become better people.

  1. You discover you’re actually a super hero. Sleep ain’t got nothing on you. You have learnt to thrive on sometimes no sleep at all. Yet you manage to get up, take care of little human beings, get to work and do your job like a boss. And it’s obvious to those that work with you. They all wonder - How does she do it? When does she sleep? He must not be human?

  2. You now have deep empathy for other working parents. You will never know what it’s like to be a working parent, until you’ve become one. This becomes an asset when you start to manage other working parents or hire working parents. They know that you get it.

  3. You will find meaning in your work. This means you will not compromise on your values and the impact you want to have on the world. That means others will see that spark in you. That is because in order to make it worthwhile leaving your kids (sometimes infants) to the care of others, you must be running towards something that’s worth it.

  4. You are prepared for anything. 4-person Earthquake survival kit? Check. Emergency water supply storage? Check. Emergency seat belt cutter and window smasher? Check. Emergency sleeping bag? Check. As the master of the “what if”s you will always be thinking two steps ahead.

  5. You become a better influencer. In order to become a person of influence, you’ll need to have meaningful relationships with your coworkers. And that starts with being great listeners/reflectors to others. Feeling heard and valued is one of the core desires every human has. As a parent, you bring your ‘A’ game in reflective listening. You just can’t help but become a better listener to everyone around you. As your kids grow, they will give you plenty of training in becoming a great empathetic and reflective listener.

  6. You’re gonna have more fun at work. Once you have kids, you’ll realize that life isn’t all about work. You’ll realize that laughter (even at yourself!) actually goes a long way… for everyone. You’ll start to see the world through the eyes of a child - and that can only fuel more creativity and problem-solving at your work.
